Fairfield, Conn. (October 12,
2007)--Erin Canning (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) scored
in the 59th minute while Anna Lebo (Walkersville,
Md./Walkersville) made a key save on a penalty shot with
six minutes left to lead Mount St. Mary's past Sacred Heart, 1-0,
in women's soccer action on Friday afternoon. The win snapped a
three-game losing streak for the Mount and improved the team's
record to 3-9-0 overall and 1-2-0 in the Northeast Conference.
After a scoreless first half, Canning
corralled a loose ball in front of the Sacred Heart goal and buried
her first goal of the season from five yards out. Lebo made that
goal stand as she made a season-high 12 saves in goal. Lebo's key
save came when Sacred Heart was awarded a penalty kick with 5:59
left in the game. Lebo stopped Sacred Heart's Ashley Testani's shot
that was low and to the right to preserve the victory.
In the first half, Sacred Heart held a
six-to-four advantage in shots while Lebo made four saves in the
half. Sacred Heart (0-9-3, 0-1-2 NEC) goalkeeper Meghan Reichelt
made her only save of the game in the opening half. For the game,
the Pioneers held a 19-to-7 advantage in shots and a seven-to-two
edge in corner kicks.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on
Sunday, October 14, with a 1:00 p.m. game at NEC rival Fairleigh
Dickinson.
Game Notes: The win was
the Mount's fourth-straight game decided by a 1-0 margin...The win
snapped the Mount's 19-game losing streak in 1-0 games dating back
five seasons...The win also was the Mount's first one-goal victory
in 15 games...It was the Mount's first win in five games against
Sacred Heart in Fairfield...Sacred Heart now leads the all-time
series, 7-to-3.
