Emmitsburg, Md. (September 3, 2006)--Despite
Meghan Haspert's first goal of the season, the Mount St. Mary's
women's soccer was edged by Francis Marion, 2-1, in the home opener
at the MSM Soccer Field on Sunday afternoon. Francis Marion's
Kirby Stenard scored twice in the first half to propel her team to
victory.
The Mount (0-3) had the first scoring chance of the day, but
Karyn Farrar's shot trickled just wide of the goal five minutes
into the match. The Patriots (1-3) answered when Stenard converted
an Angela Salem cross at the 10:31 mark of the first half. Stenard
then staked her team to a 2-0 lead with her second goal of the
game. A Mount player tried to clear the ball, but Stenard stepped
in and her ricochet shot beat Mount goalkeeper Anna Lebo.
After being outshot 8-1 in the first half, the Mount picked up
its play in the second stanza. Sophomore Meghan Haspert put the
Mountaineers on the scoreboard when she buried a shot from just
outside the penalty box to cut the deficit to 2-1 with 31:57 left
in the game. The Mount had a couple of opportunities to tie the
game, but shots by Jenn Baker and Nicki Togno sailed over the cross
bar.
Francis Marion held a 13-6 advantage in shots in the game as
each team had one corner kick. Lebo made five saves in the loss
for the Mount while Jacque Sutphin made two saves while earning the
victory.
The Mount returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 5, when Lafayette
visits the MSM Soccer Field for a 4:00 p.m. game.
