Freshman Neil Ouska's goal 58 seconds into the second overtime
lifted the Mount St. Mary's men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over
Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday afternoon. It was Ouska's first
collegiate goal.
The Mount (4-9-4) scored the winning goal after being awarded a
free kick from 25 yards out. Vinnie Berry lofted the ball into the
penalty box where it was headed by Brandon Moncrief to Ouska, who
was wide open right in front of the goal. Ouska buried the shot to
give the Mount the victory.
Fairleigh Dickinson had the best scoring chance in regulation
when Samson Malijani broke in one-on-one with Mount goalkeeper Mark
Murphy with just under 13 minutes left in the game. Murphy,
however, came up with the save to preserve the tie. In the final
minute, FDU's Chris Wymer also had a clean shot on goal, but he
missed the net.
Murphy made three saves in the game to earn the shutout victory
while Fairleigh Dickinson goalkeeper Tomer Chencinski made two
saves in the loss. Shots in the game were tied at 10-10 while the
Knights had a 5-to-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The Mount played the spoiler role in the game, preventing
Fairleigh Dickinson (9-4-4, 6-1-2 NEC) from clinching the Northeast
Conference regular season title, which the Knights would have
earned with a victory today. With the loss, FDU finishes second in
the league.
The Mount had five seniors play their final game in a Mount
uniform. The five seniors, Steve Dellamore, Pierre Del Aguila,
Moncrief, Murphy and Jeffrey Ormiston each started for the Mount in
the game.
