Home Runs Fly as Mount Avoids Sweep with 9-2 Win Over Iona

EMMITSBURG, Md. (March 8, 2026) – Mount St. Mary's baseball notched their first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference win on Sunday afternoon with a 9-2 rebound-win against Iona. With the win, the Mount sets in at 1-2 in Conference play while bettering their overall record to 6-7.

With two outs to start the bottom half of the first, Alex Mendes sent the first home run of the year beyond the walls of The Straw to take an early 1-0 lead. Iona followed up Mendes' blast with one of their own in the top of the second, but Bryce Rudisill put the Mount back into the lead the next half-inning, scoring on an error by the left fielder.

Following the trend, Christian Bauman hit out a solo shot to extend the Mount lead to two runs in the bottom of the third. Both team's bats fell silent for an inning, until Rudisill came up to bat with two runners on, hitting a no doubter out to right field to extend the Mount's five run lead.

The Mount continued to stay consistent at the plate even after fifth inning explosion, with Ty Fredo being walked in during the bottom of the sixth. Fredo batted in Evan Meier with a single an inning later before Mike Toth scored in the bottom of the eighth on a wild pitch. Iona scored one more run in the sixth but did not provide much of a threat in the later innings for the Mountaineers.

Meier and Rudisill both recorded three-hit days against the Gaels, with Rudisill's home run in the fifth awarding him three RBIs for the day. Mendes and Fredo both recorded two hits, with Mendes' early home run setting the tone. And Toth recorded three walks on the day against the Gael pitching staff. Bauman hit out his home run for his only hit of the day while Phoenix Williams recorded a single during the bottom of the sixth.

Owen Crowe began the game and recorded 2.1 IP, striking out three while giving up three hits, only giving up one run from Iona's home run in the second. Koen Bowling came in during third inning, producing a pop out and a lineout with runners on second and third. Earning his second win on the year, Jakob Foster recorded 2.2 IP on the mound, striking out two while giving up one run. Maximus McCrary came into relieve during the sixth, striking out three while only allowing a single hit in his 1.1 innings on the mound. And Riley Williams came in from the pen for a two inning-feature allowing a hit while striking out two Gaels in the win.
