Baseball Falls to Iona in Hagerstown During First Two Games of Series

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (March 6, 2026) – Mount St. Mary's baseball lost the first two games of their Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opening series against Iona on Friday afternoon, falling to the Gaels by scores of 3-2 and 5-3 in Hagerstown. With the losses, the Mountaineers fall to 5-7 on the season while looking to avoid the sweep on Saturday.

MOUNT UPDATE

The first two innings of game remained scoreless at Meritus Park until Iona broke the deadlock in the top of the third, as Iona's Silvia batted in Ciprian on an infield single. Mount St. Mary's tied the game quickly in bottom of the fourth as Bryce Rudisill doubled sending Christian Bauman to the plate to tie the game at 1-1.

Bauman came to the plate in the bottom of the fifth, doubling to right field, scoring Agar from third as Evan Meier made his way to third base, eventually being left on base. Iona scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning, and with the Mount bats falling silent during the final third of the game, the Mount fill in game one.

Both Rudisill and Bauman recorded two hits each in game one while also knocking in a run a piece. Even with the attributed loss, Serigne Sarre recorded 6.0 IP in game one against Iona, allowing one earned run while striking out 10 Gaels during his outing.

Game two for the Mountaineers started as Eli DeRossi walked the bases loaded to drive home the first visitor run of the afternoon, with the Mount striking back later in the top of the third. In perhaps one of the weirdest errors of the year, Joey Agar scored from second base on an error from the pitcher. Iona's pitcher failed to pick the catcher off at second base, hitting Agar in the helmet, sending the senior from Washington Township, New Jersey to third base only for the centerfielder to slip on the wet turf outfield, allowing the ball past him and allowing Agar to score uncontested.

Iona regained a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth only for the Mount bats to come alive once again in the bottom of the sixth. Christian Bauman doubled to in the middle part of the inning to send Meier home to score. Ty Fredo knocked in Bauman the next at-bat, allowing the Mount to take a 3-2 lead in the sixth. Iona hit a two-run shot in the in the top of the seventh followed by a single run in the top of the ninth to take a lead. The Mountaineers left the bases loaded to end the bottom of the ninth, rounding out game two in Hagerstown.

Fredo went 3-4 in the game, coming up a home run shy of a cycle while driving in a run and working a walk. Alex Mendes went 1-3, hitting a triple in the bottom of the second while swiping two bags. And Bauman went 1-4, hitting a double while knocking in a run. Meier had a unlucky day at the plate, making solid contact on everything while hitting into unfortunate flyouts and lineouts. DeRossi and Halcisak both went 4.0 innings in game two, striking out four a piece while JB Manarchuck came into relive during the ninth, striking out one while getting all three outs in the inning with a runner on third.
