EMMITSBURG, Md. (February 24, 2026) – Mount St. Mary's men's lacrosse engaged in a defensive slugfest Tuesday with UMBC. The Retrievers were able to break through in the fourth quarter and take the contest, 7-4.
Bennett Wright still finished with a solid stat sheet despite the defeat, registering 10 saves. The defense caused six UMBC turnovers, led by
Sam Azbill with two.
Four different Mount players posted goals.
Brody Atkinson and
Kevin Whitty contributed assists for two points each.
HOW THE GAME UNFOLDED
- The teams fought to a 2-1 score by halftime. Ryan Demato scored the first goal of the game for UMBC with 9:56 left in the first quarter. Mount responded with strikes from Marcelo Carreiro and Atkinson to secure the halftime lead.
- Neither side got on the board in the third quarter, as only four of 16 shots were on goal. Connor McMahon saved three for UMBC and Wright saved one for the Mount.
- Chris Grimaldi gave the Mount its largest lead at 3-1 with 14:11 remaining. Demato tied the game with two consecutive goals for the Retrievers. Whitty responded with a Mount goal at the 9:49 mark for a 4-3 score.
- UMBC closed out the game on a 4-0 run. Dante Marinello tied it, and Corey Myers scored the eventual game winner.
