EMMITSBURG, MD (October 7, 2026) – Continuing her stellar, stat-filled season, sophomore goalkeeper
Abby Makela scored a goal of her own in Wednesday's contest between Mount St. Mary's and Niagara. The Purple Eagles would respond twice and capture the match by a 2-1 final.
For the Mount, Makela's goal is the first by a keeper since October 25, 2009, when Sadie Winship struck from 40 yards out on a free kick against Central Connecticut.
With the result, the Mount is 2-8-2 and 2-4-1 in the Metro Conference.
HOW THE MATCH UNFOLDED
- A strong wind at Makela's back made the goal possible. In the 12th minute, she set up a clearance from the top of her defending box. The blustery conditions picked up the ball and sent it over all 20 field players and bouncing towards Niagara netminder Julia Poissant. One bounce caromed over her head and into the back of the net.
- Both of Niagara's goals came after halftime. Naiya Johnston equalized in the 53rd minute, and Caitlyn Gratton scored the game-winner in the 59th minute.
- After a collision forced Makela from the match, Anna Wall once again did an admirable job stepping up, making two saves to keep the Mount in the contest. The windy conditions – now in the Mountaineers' faces – proved difficult as the team only received three chances to equalize.
