LAKEWOOD, Ohio (September 6, 2025) – Mount St. Mary's men's rugby reigned victorious in their opening day matchup against Davenport, with the Mountaineers beating the Panthers by a score of 29-14. The Mount starts the year with a 1-0 record, keeping steam from last year's opener which saw the Mount beat Air Force by a score of 41-12.
The match started with an early penalty conversion for the Mountaineers, as
Evan Corbett put through a kick, going up 3-0 within three minutes.
Hayden McKay opened the tries for the Mount in the 19
th minute, with a Corbett conversion following soon after.
Xavier Locke and
Fintan Hughes added to the Mount's score through the first before McKay once again found the goal line to take a 29-0 score into the halftime break.
Davenport added 14 points in the second half, but it was too little to late with the Mount's insurance points in the first. Locke and Hughes tallied solo tries against the Panthers while McKay contributed to the game with a brace of scoring. Corbett went 3-4 on conversion kicks after the try, with a penalty conversion following suit.
