EMMITSBURG, Md. (September 27, 2025) – Facing a ranked opponent, Mount St. Mary's men's soccer rose to the challenge and made a valiant effort against the #20 Marist Red Foxes. Despite
Eliot O'Neil keeping it close by converting a penalty, two early Marist goals were enough for a 2-1 decision.
O'Neil took his own penalty after Red Foxes keeper Jamie Lowell denied an obvious scoring chance to the Mount sophomore. The conversion came in the 38
th minute when O'Neil planted the shot in the lower right corner for his second goal of the year.
The Mountaineers generated six opportunities to produce an equalizer in the second half, but each chance wound up going off target.
Marist earned their two goals in the opening 30 minutes. Gijs Verheul scored first on a fast shot that glanced off a Mount defender. Ethan Ortiz followed with a goal off a cross from Skyler Cunha.
With the defeat, the Mount is now 1-4-3 for the season with a 1-1 mark in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC).
One final non-conference match awaits the Mountaineers as they host their second consecutive top 25 challenger with #24 Bucknell. MAAC play continues the following Saturday (Oct. 4) at Sacred Heart.
