Women’s Lacrosse Firms Grip atop MAAC with Win over Fairfield

EMMITSBURG, Md. (April 5, 2025) – Entrenching themselves even further at the top of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) standings, Mount St. Mary's women's lacrosse handed Fairfield its first regular season MAAC defeat since 2023. The Mountaineers controlled the pace for much of the game on the way to a 10-7 win.

The victory keeps Mount St. Mary's at the top of the MAAC standings, improving to 8-4 (4-0 MAAC) this year. It is now a two-way tie for first in the league with Iona also holding a 4-0 MAAC mark.

Goalkeeping, defense, and draw controls all played a role in the early established presence. Camille Thomas finished with 10 saves, registering her fourth double digit effort this season. Six different defenders caused a turnover, led by two by Olivia Nelson. The sisterly duo of Molly and Brooke Molchanoff split six draw controls between them.

On the offensive side, Anna Salerno secured her fifth consecutive hat trick. Anna McQuay and Mackenzi Furlong notched two-goal efforts.

Mount St. Mary's went wire-to-wire to grab the win, beginning with a 3-0 run. Salerno, Madison Harmening, and Brooke Molchanoff took the reins by planting shots in the net. From there, the defense kept the Stags in check while the offense made a gradual increase in the advantage. A 4-0 outburst between the second and third quarters put the contest at 9-3 entering the fourth quarter. That margin was more than enough to withstand a late Fairfield rally.

The victory for the Mount ends a 14-game regular season MAAC winning streak for Fairfield, when they lost a 2023 scheduled game to Niagara. The Purple Eagles also defeated them in the 2024 MAAC Championship, when both teams made the NCAA Tournament. The last instance of a MAAC team not named Niagara defeating Fairfield came in 2022, when they fell to Monmouth.

On Wednesday (Apr. 9), the Mountaineers welcome Niagara back to Waldron Family Stadium. First draw is at 1 p.m. and the game airs on ESPN+.
