Mount St. Mary's Splits Twinbill at Saint Peter's on Tuesday

Jersey City, N.J. (April 29, 2025)—Mount St. Mary's closed out it's Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) schedule with a split of a doubleheader at Saint Peter's on Tuesday.  After dropping the opening game, 6-1, the Mountaineers took the nightcap, 7-4.

Saint Peter's 6, Mount St. Mary's 0 (Game 1)
The Peacocks scored three runs in the third and fourth innings to secure a 6-0 victory over the Mount in game one of today's twinbill.

The Mount (10-38, 5-21 MAAC) threatened to take the lead in the top of the first when Kelsie Bandelow and Brianna Manni each singled, but the Peacocks got a pop out to end the frame.

Saint Peter's (13-32, 4-19 MAAC) broke up the scoreless game by stringing together six consecutive two-out hits to score three times in the bottom of the third inning.  The Peacocks added to the lead with three more runs in the fourth.

Emma Tawney put the Mount on the scoreboard with an RBI double in the top of the seventh to plate pinch runner Lia FestaLaurenne Gallagher singled to open the inning for the Mountaineers.
Courtney Chew and Maya Alvarez also added hits for the Mount in the loss.

Olivia Murphy started for the Mount, allowing five runs in 3.1 innings while Sophia Schmehl pitched the final 2.2 innings, allowing one run while striking out four.

Mount St. Mary's 7, Saint Peter's 4 (Game 2)
The Mountaineers jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second game and held on for a 7-4 victory over the Peacocks.  Gina Del Giorno, Kelsie Bandelow and Lia Festa combined for seven hits in the win.

The Mount started quickly with three consecutive singles to start the game. Del Giorno had an infield hit, Bandelow singled to left, and Tristin Koerner singled up the middle to plate Del Giorno with the game's first run.  Brianna Manni then brought home Bandelow with a sacrifice squeeze bunt.

Mount St. Mary's added three more runs in the fourth to push the lead to five.  Gallagher started the inning with a double, and Tawney's single scored Gallagher for a 3-0 lead.  Festa added an RBI double with Del Giorno tripling home Festa for a 5-0 advantage.

The Peacocks rallied for four runs in the bottom of the sixth to make things interesting.  Freshman Ellie Meier came on in relief with runners on first and second with one out in the Mount leading 5-4 in the sixth, and she got out of the jam with a groundout and a flyout.

The Mountaineers added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh to secure the win.  Emily Felice and Lia Festa each singled to open the inning, putting runners on first and third.  Festa then stole second, and both runners came home to score on a throwing error by the catcher.   Meier then set down Saint Peter's in order to earn her second save of the season.

Del Giorno finished the game 3-for-4 with a triple while Bandelow was 2-for-4 in the game.  Festa went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored with Felice finishing the day 1-for-3 with a pair of runs scored.
Schmehl earned the win in game two, striking out three in four scoreless innings.  Schmehl leads the Mount with five wins this season.  Meier retired all five batters she faced in the game.

UP NEXT:  The Mount closes out the 2025 season with a home doubleheader against Lehigh on Saturday, May 3rd, at Our Lady of the Meadows Field on campus.  The Mountaineers will celebrate Senior Day with a ceremony prior to the noon start.
