Mountaineers Best Golden Griffins in Extra Innings During Game One

BUFFALO, N.Y. (April 25, 2025) – Mount St. Mary's baseball were victorious in game one of their Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference series against Canisius by a scoreline of 6-4 after 10 innings of play in Buffalo. With the victory, the Mountaineers improve to a 9-10 record in the MAAC and a overall record of 16-24.  

Canisius struck first in the game, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first while shutting out the Mountaineers for the next four innings. Sam Grube finally got the Mount on the board in the top of the fifth after he ground out to the second baseman while scoring Bryce Rudisill. Nolan Book scored on a balk in the top of the sixth to tie the game at 2-2 followed by a go ahead triple from Evan Meier that scoring Nick Fleming to grab the first Mountaineer lead of the game.

A Golden Griffin run came across the plate in the bottom of the sixth, tying the game back up at 3-3. But in the top of the seventh, Alex Mendes scored from third base on a wild pitch to take another 4-3 lead, only for the Mount lead to be leveled once more in the bottom of the inning.

Two scoreless innings proceeded between the Mount and Canisius in the eighth and ninth, forcing extra innings in Buffalo. With one out in the top of the tenth, Book singled up the middle, scoring Fredo to retake the lead. A throwing error by the third basemen caused Evan Smith to reach base while Book came around to score from first base to take a two-run, 6-4 lead heading into the bottom of the inning, never relinquishing the lead again.

Max McCrary earned his third win of the year while pitching a 1.2 inning, two strikeout appearance from the bullpen. Serigne Sarre once again showed his talent as a starter, striking out seven in 4.0 innings of work while only letting up three hits.

UP NEXT

The Mountaineers and Golden Griffins return to action tomorrow, April 26 for game two of the series with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m. in Buffalo.
