Men's Lacrosse Drops Final Road Game to Pioneers

Emmitsburg, MD (April 19, 2025) - The Mountaineers men's lacrosse team fell to Sacred Heart on Saturday (Apr. 19) in their final road contest, 13-10.  The Mount now falls to 3-10 overall and 1-6 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play.
 
Marcelo Carreiro led the Mountaineers in scoring for the day, scoring four of the team's goals. Kevin Whitty scored two for the Mount while Mekai Nelson, Brody Atkinson, Carter Quested, and Jack Smith scored one. Kevin Whitty sits at the top for assist totals in the contest with three, while Jack Smith assisted teammates twice. Mekai Nelson scooped up six groundballs and caused three turnovers.  Bennett Wright had a busy day in the goal as Sacred Heart had 32 shots on goal. Wright tallied 19 saves, allowing 13 goals, and showing a .594 save percentage.
 
The Mount began scoring in the game with Mekai Nelson scooping a groundball on a turnover and scoring his goal within a minute and a half of the first faceoff. Sacred Heart answered with three goals of their own. Marcelo Carreiro scored his first goal of the day with 8:50 remaining in the first quarter. Sacred Heart held control for the remainder of the first quarter, scoring two more goals to hold a 5-2 lead going into the second. Sacred Heart continued their scoring with two goals to open up the second quarter. The Mount was able to slow the bleeding with another Carreiro goal, but the Pioneers answered with two more goals to end the first half with a lead, 10-3.
 
The Mountaineers came out firing out of the break, scoring the only three goals of the quarter, and bringing them to within four of the Sacred Heart lead. In the fourth, the Pioneers fought back, scoring two goals to lead by six. The back-and-forth battle continued as Kevin Whitty scored before another Pioneer goal. The Mount scored three more goals but were unable to overcome the deficit, losing 13-10.
 
The Mountaineers will return home to play their final game of the regular season against Iona on Wednesday, April 23, in Waldron Family Stadium. The first faceoff will be at 12 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
