Offensive Firepower Secures Mount's Win Over Gaels

Emmitsburg, MD (April 23, 2025) – The Mount St. Mary's men's lacrosse team won this Saturday (April 23) against the Iona Gaels, 14-6. The Mount moves to 4-10 overall, and 2-6 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play.
 
The Mount's offense was impressive in their final home game of the season, with three different players scoring hat tricks. Carter Quested scored three of his goals back-to-back-to-back, all coming in the third and fourth quarters. Quested added one assist, one caused turnover, and led the team in groundballs with seven scooped in the contest. Jack Smith was efficient on the field, scoring his three goals on three total shots. Smith rounded out his stat sheet with one assist and two groundballs. Brody Atkinson was the third player with a hat trick, along with one groundball and one assist.
  
The Mount secured 46 groundballs in the contest, besting Iona's 39, and gained possessions through a tremendous faceoff day. Freshman Garrett Conley led the team for faceoffs, winning 9 of the 12 he participated in. Jaden Saysanam was solid, winning 6 of his 11 taken.
 
The Mount's defense held strong, causing 10 turnovers. Conner Aquino led the defense with two caused turnovers and six groundballs. Mekai Nelson and Seamus McCloskey combined for four caused turnovers and three groundballs on the day.  Goalkeeper Bennett Wright had another tremendous day in the net, saving 15 shots. With only five of Iona's goals scoring with Wright in the goal, Wright secured an impressive .714 save percentage in his fourth win this season. Jack VanValkenburgh relieved Wright in the goal with 3:24 left in the contest and allowed one goal and tallied one save.
 
The Mount fired the ball at the goal 49 times, with 22 being on goal. With 14 being scored, the Mount owned a .636 shot percentage and a .449 shot on goal percentage for the day. Winning 15 of the 23 faceoffs, the Mountaineers had a .652 faceoff win percentage. The Mount was only man down for 30 seconds in the game compared to Iona's four total minutes in the box. The Mount was successful through their midfielders as well, with 21 good clears on 23 attempts.
 
With the win, the Mount stands at 4-10 overall and 2-6 in the MAAC at the end of the regular season.
