EMMITSBURG, Md. (April 16, 2025) – Using another strong second half, Mount St. Mary's women's lacrosse captured a victory over the Iona Gaels, 12-7, Wednesday in New Rochelle.
The Mount improves to 10-5 for the entire season and 6-1 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). They will hold at least a share of first place at the conclusion of Wednesday's game. A win in the regular season finale Saturday (Apr. 19) against Merrimack nets the top seeded at the upcoming conference tournament, where they would host the semifinals and finals.
A trio of goal scorers provide 10 of the 12 Mountaineers goals.
Mackenzi Furlong led the way with four tallies – a season high for the graduate student.
Anna Salerno finished with three goals to collect her eighth consecutive hat trick, and
Logan Cook added three of her own for her second hat trick of the campaign.
MK Allingham and
Brooke Molchanoff also scored, with Molchanoff adding two of the team's three assists.
Defense also played its role, especially in the second half, with
Camille Thomas taking charge. The sophomore collected 12 saves, one shy of a career high. Nine caused turnovers are attributed to the defense, with Salerno and
Olivia Nelson tabulating two each.
The second half outburst was setup by a late run in the first half. Down 5-3, the Mount posted the last three goals going into halftime. Furlong's shot with 17 seconds remaining put the contest at 6-5. Tied 7-7 early in the third quarter, the Mount's defense locked in while the offense finished the match on a 5-0 run. Cook tallied the ultimate go-ahead shot and provided cushion a few minutes later.
First draw for the regular season finale is at noon from Waldron Family Stadium.
