Strong Second Half Helps Mount Right Ship in Rainy Poughkeepsie

EMMITSBURG, Md. (April 12, 2025) – Outscoring their opponents 8-3 in the second half while also battling dismal conditions, Mount St. Mary's women's lacrosse got back in the win column Saturday with a 14-9 defeat of Marist in Poughkeepsie, New York.

Anna Salerno provided the offensive spark for the Mount, scoring six times to surpass her top mark for goals in a season while securing a hat trick for the seventh consecutive game. Four of the six goals came in the second half. Brooke Molchanoff posted a multi-goal game as the duo headlined a group of eight Mountaineers who found the back of the net.

Mount St. Mary's won the draw control battle 16-10, with Brooke Molchanoff leading the charge with six. Teammate Hailey Chester added another five and Molly Molchanoff registered four. The team cut down on turnovers, only giving it away on 12 occasions despite the elements.

After the visiting Mountaineers reached a 3-0 edge, Marist fought back in the first half. The Red Foxes posted six of the next nine to deadlock proceedings at the break.

Anna McQuay's last second shot to make it 6-6 at halftime may have provided the momentum the Mount needed. Salerno took control from there, popping up three goals to help the squad seize control. Mackenzi Furlong, Madison Harmening, Brooke Molchanoff and Logan Cook all scored after that as the Mountaineers pieced together an 8-0 run. That advantage was more than enough cushion to fend off some late Marist goals and win.

Mount St. Mary's is now 9-5 and 5-1 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) this year. The victory clinches the Mount a postseason berth in the upcoming conference championship.

A pivotal battle for seeding in that championship awaits this coming Wednesday (Apr. 16) as the Mountaineers to New Rochelle, New York to take on Iona. First draw is at noon.
