Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Overtime Offense Leads to Mount Win

New Andover, Mass. (April 12, 2025) – The Mount St. Mary's men's lacrosse team is bringing home its first Metro Atlantic Athletic (MAAC) win after defeating Merrimack in overtime, 13-12.
Freshman Carter Quested took over the game, scoring six goals for the Mountaineers. The six-goal mark is Quested's career high for goals in a game. The first year also tallied one assist, one groundball, and one caused turnover.  Sophomore and leading scorer for the Mount, Brody Atkinson scored two goals in the Mount's effort, bringing his season total to 32.  Collin Thomson matched Atkinson's two goals, including one that sent the game to overtime. Marcelo Carreiro, Jack Smith, and Kevin Whitty each added a goal to propel the Mountaineers to a win.  Bennett Wright had a tremendous game in the goal, saving 20 of the 32 shots on goal. Wright's .625 save percentage, along with the Mount's seven caused turnovers, proved strong against an aggressive Warrior attack.

The Mount had to begin the game fighting back, as the Warriors scored a goal early in the first quarter. With 7:02 remaining in the first, Carter Quested got the Mount on the board with a goal, assisted by Jack Smith. Quested scored one more goal in the quarter, and after two more Warriors goals, the first quarter ended 3-2.  The Mount struck first in the second with Kevin Whitty scoring a goal with less than two minutes off the clock. Quested scored his third goal less than a minute later, giving the Mount the lead 4-3. After another matched goal by Merrimack, Quested was fed the ball by Collin Thomson and gave the lead back to the Mount. Brody scored his first goal of the day on a man-up opportunity and was matched by Merrimack's offense again. The team's headed into the locker room tied, 6-6.

Out of the break, Merrimack took advantage of a won faceoff, scoring with only six seconds off the clock. Atkinson scored his second goal of the day to tie the game with 12:53 remaining in the third quarter. After a Merrimack goal to give them the lead, Jack Smith responded to keep the game locked at eight. Merrimack took control at the end of the third, scoring two unanswered goals and holding the lead going into the final quarter of regulation. The Mount came out firing in the fourth, though, scoring three unanswered goals of their own and taking the lead. The Warriors tied the game at 11 with 4:54 remaining on the clock. After one more goal and taking the lead, Merrimack allowed Mount's Collin Thomson to score the tying goal with just over thirty seconds remaining in the game.

After no goal was scored in the final seconds of regulation, the game headed to overtime. With 2:45 remaining in overtime, Bennett Wright made a save, falling to his knees and saving the game for the Mountaineers. Carter Quested finalized the game, scoring a goal to secure the win, 13-12.

The Mountaineers will head to Connecticut to take on Sacred Heart in their penultimate regular-season contest on Saturday, April 19, at 12 p.m.
