EMMITSBURG, Md. (March 9, 2025) – Two of the top 20 defenses in the country met at Waldron Family Stadium Sunday and lived up to the billing. Mount St. Mary's took advantage of free position shots to go ahead, then fended off a late Old Dominion charge to win 9-8.
Camille Thomas led the defensive effort in goal, registering 10 saves which ties a career high. The sophomore also earned seven ground balls in the game. The Mountaineers caused seven turnovers, with
Anna Salerno and
Hailey Chester forcing two each.
On offense, Salerno and
Madison Harmening both scored twice. Six of the team's goals came on free position attempts, all coming from different players.
Brooke Molchanoff tallied the lone assist for the Mountaineers.
Sarah Murrell led the Monarchs and all offensive players with five goals. Goalie Brynn Bowen secured eight goals in the loss.
The Mount took to the lead early, posting four of the first five goals. Harmening and Salerno started the offensive effort, followed by
Brooke Molchanoff and
Peyton Sims – the latter of whom scored for the second time in her career. The home side further bolstered their advantage to 6-2 by halftime.
Leading 8-5 after the third quarter, Salerno scored again to give the Mount its ninth goal with 13:17 remaining. ODU then made a push with an almost instantaneous response to make it 9-6 and two late goals to put the contest at 9-8 with 2:05 left. But
Logan Cook won the subsequent draw control and wound down the clock enough that the Monarchs were unable to piece together a tying shot.
Mount St. Mary's improves to 4-3 while Old Dominion falls to 6-3. The Mount's next game is on Monday, March 17 when they host the Cincinnati Bearcats.
