EMMITSBURG, Md. (March 22, 2025) – With 18 seconds left,
Anna Salerno completed a come-from-behind effort with a game-winning goal as Mount St. Mary's women's lacrosse defeated Canisius 11-10 Saturday at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo.
Granted a woman-up situation as the seconds ticked down, the Mount bided their time and hoped for a clutch shot. As the clock went under 30 seconds,
Mackenzi Furlong found Salerno who skirted past the defender for the score. The Mountaineers won the ensuing draw control and held on long enough to take the victory.
Salerno was also instrumental in drawing the contest level, scoring with 6:15 to go. The senior found the back of the net four times.
Anna McQuay added a hat trick, while freshman
Brooke Molchanoff had her first collegiate multi-goal effort. Furlong contributed a goal and two assists for a three point afternoon.
The defense forced 21 turnovers, with 11 being credited to individuals. Salerno caused two turnovers as did
Jamie Fedorjaka and
Shannon McTavish. Returning from injury,
Hailey Chester won six draw controls.
Despite trailing most of the contest, the Mount barred Canisius from running away with it, never falling behind by more than two. Down 7-5 in the third quarter, goals by Furlong and Molchanoff leveled the score. For several minutes, the Golden Griffins would score, and the Mount would retaliate.
Logan Cook tied the game at 8-8, with Salerno scoring at 9-9. Each individual rally helped set up Salerno's final two tallies.
Mount St. Mary's improves to 5-4 (1-0 MAAC) while Canisius is 3-5 (0-1 MAAC). The Mount is also 3-1 in road games this year.
Next Saturday (Mar. 29), the Mountaineers host Siena at Waldron Family Stadium. First draw is at noon.
