NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (March 14, 2025) – Mount St. Mary's baseball won the opening game of their second Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference series of the year against Iona by a score of 9-8. With their most recent win, the Mountaineers move to an 8-8 record with a 2-2 record in the MAAC.

After a early 1-0 lead by the Gaels in the bottom of the first, the Mountaineers got on the board after a Ty Fredo single to right field scored Sam Grube to tie the game. Iona then went on a unanswered 5-0 run, scoring all five runs in the third to grab a 6-1 lead. An Alex Mendes infield single scored Mateo Zeppieri in the top of the fourth to cut the lead to four followed by a Grube single that scored Ethan Flaugher and a Mendes score after Fredo reached base on a error by third basemen in the top of the sixth to cut the deficit 6-4. Mikey Rodriguez started the scoring back up in the seventh after a sacrifice fly scored Nick Fleming. Rodriguez came back up to the plate in the top of the ninth, doubling down the left field line to drive in Fleming, Bryce Rudisill, and Joey Agar, taking a 8-6 lead. The final Mountaineers run came in the same inning after Mendes grounded into a fielder's choice, scoring Rodriguez. After a shaky bottom of the ninth, Nickolas Mora flew out to Mendes in right field, with the junior transfer securing the catch and the win for the Mount in the end.

Grube led the day from the plate, going 4-6 from the plate while driving in a RBI and scoring a run himself. Rodriguez had himself a day, going 1-1 with a sacrifice fly and four RBIs in tow for his substitution appearance. And both Mendes and Flaugher went 2-5 from the plate, also accounting for one run scored each. Josh Halcisak was accredited with the win on the day, moving his season record to 2-2. And Maximus McCrary was awarded with his first save of the year with his ninth inning appearance out of the bullpen.
