Second Half Sorrows End with Mount Losing Home Opener

Emmitsburg, Md (February 8, 2025) – The Mount St. Mary's men's lacrosse team dropped their home opener on Saturday (Feb. 8) to Long Island University (LIU), 15-12. For the Mountaineers a win would have been historic, going 2-0 for the first time in program history since joining D1.

The game opened with a quick goal for LIU in less than two minutes from the opening faceoff. LIU's Ben Schuster had his first of five goals on the day unassisted off the clear. One minute later, Mount's Brody Atkinson tallied another goal into his career goal count, netting the Mount's first goal off an assist by John Miller IV. LIU then went on a 3-0 run to take the lead 4-1. The Mount then matched LIU's 3-0 run with one of their own, tying the game 4-4 at the end of the first quarter.

The Mount awakened in the second quarter, going on a seven-goal unanswered run with five different players scoring. Atkinson and Carter Quested both scored two goals during the run while Kevin Whitty, Collin Thomson, and Marcelo Carreiro each tallied one of their own to round out the Mount's first-half scoring. The end of the first half ended with an LIU goal to make the score 11-5 Mount.

This was the end of Mount's strong offense though as the second half showed a different story.  LIU came out firing, scoring four unanswered goals before the Mount's Jack Smith scored one of his own to end the run. This completed the Mount's scoring for the day though as the Sharks' defense held the Mount to nine total shots in the second half.  After Smith's goal, LIU scored six more goals to secure themselves the win, 15-12.

Bennett Wright started the game in goal for the Mount. Of the 32 shots he faced, Wright saved 17 of them showing a .531 save percentage. Trevor Sutton got substituted into the game with 1:48 left in the final quarter and did not face any shots.
