Emmitsburg, Md. (February 6, 2025)—Iona's DeJour Reaves drained a three-pointer at the buzzer to lift Iona to a 70-67 win over Mount St. Mary's at Knott Arena on Thursday night.
Jedy Cordilia paced the Mount with 21 points and 12 rebounds in the game. Mount St. Mary's falls to 13-10 overall and 6-6 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference with the loss.
The Mount scored the opening basket over the overtime period on a
Dola Adebayo bucket in the paint to take a 63-61 lead. Iona's Adam Njie Jr. evened the score on the next possession, starting a string of the Gaels matching Mount points in the extra session. Cordilia scored in the paint with Reaves answering with a basket with 1:58 left to tie the score at 65-65. The Mount's
Xavier Lipscomb hit a pair of free throws for a 67-65 lead with 1:31 on the clock, but Iona's Yaphet Moundi answered with a basket off a Njie Jr. assist with 1:01 left to make it 67-67.
The Mount had a chance to take the lead, but Adebayo's three-pointer was off the mark, and Iona grabbed the rebound. On the final possession, Njie Jr. missed a jumper, but Moundi was able to corral the rebound and feed the ball to Luke Jungers. Jungers was able to get the ball to Reaves, who made a fade-away three-pointer from the left wing at the buzzer. There was a referee replay review that lasted a few minutes before the shot was confirmed.
The Mountaineers held an early 6-5 advantage before the Gaels (10-13, 7-5 MAAC) took control of with 14 unanswered points for a 19-to-7 lead. Iona led 23-12 with 7:27 left in the opening half before the Mount got back into the game with a 7-0 run.
Javon Ervin scored five consecutive points ahead of a Hobbs lay-up that cut the deficit to 23-19. A Lipscomb three-pointer made it 28-26 with 1:09 left in the half before Reaves closed the half with a basket with 36 seconds on the clock for a 30-26 lead at the half.
Hobbs connected on a three-pointer to give the Mount a 45-42 lead, with 11:02 left in the second half. The Gaels answered with three-pointers from Justin Menard and Jungers to regain the lead. Iona led 59-54 with 4:14 left before the Mount rallied to force overtime.
Arlandus Keyes hit a three to make it 59-57, and Hobbs it two free throws to tie the score with 1:31 left. Njie Jr. basket with 1:13 left gave the Gaels a 61-59 lead, but Hobbs converted a drive to tie the game at 61 each. The Mount forced a turnover and had a chance to take the lead, but Hobbs was long on his turnaround jumper in the paint. Iona was unable to convert a pair of shots, and the game went to overtime.
Cordilia hit 9-of-12 from the field and finished with 21 points, 12 rebounds, three assists and a pair of blocks to pace the Mount in the game. It is his third double-double of the season and the fifth of his career. Hobbs chipped in 15 points, three rebounds and three assists while Lipscomb had 10 points, seven rebounds and six boards in the game. Jungers led Iona with 14 points.
The Mountaineers finished the game shooting 47.3 percent overall, but just 5-of-25 (.200) from three-point range. Iona shot 43.8 percent in the game, and hit 8-of-25 (.320) from beyond the arc. The Mount held a narrow 35-32 edge on the boards.
