Hampton, Va. (February 24, 2025)—Mount St. Mary's split a Monday doubleheader at Hampton, winning the opening game, 7-1, before falling in game two, 11-7.  The Mount is now 2-2 on the season.

GAME 1:  MOUNT ST. MARY'S 7, HAMPTON 1

Mount St. Mary's earned its second win of the season with a 7-1 victory over Hampton in the opening game of Monday's doubleheader.  Sophia Schmehl scattered seven hits in a complete-game victory.

The Mount scored twice in the top of the second inning to take the lead.  Emily Felice was hit by a pitch to open the frame and stole second.  Gina Del Giorno's base hit put runners on the corners, and she stole second.  A passed ball allowed Felice to score, and Avery Dinges brough home Del Giorno with an RBI single.

Mount St. Mary's scored five runs in the top of the seventh to break the game open.  Tyra Christian led off with a single, moving all the way to third on a throwing error.  Del Giorno's bunt base hit brought home pinch runner Lia Festa for a 3-0 lead.  Taylor Williams reached on an error, and Dinges followed with an RBI double to make it 4-0.  Another Hampton error allowed a run to score, and pinch hitter Maya Alvarez closed the scoring with a two-run double.

The Pirates broke up Schmehl's shutout bid with an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh. Schmehl struck out a pair while scattering seven hits in the complete-game win.  Dinges and Del Giorno each went 2-for-3 at the plate in the game.

GAME 2:  HAMPTON 11, MOUNT ST. MARY'S 7

Hampton scored 10 runs over the first three innings en route to an 11-7 win in game two of today's twinbill.  Taylor Williams went 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBI to lead the Mount offense in the game.

The Pirates (6-6) scored five times in the bottom of the first to take the early lead.  The Mountaineers fought back with a pair of runs in the second and one in the third to cut the deficit to 5-3.  Tyra Christian doubled to lead off the second, and a pair of Hampton errors allowed two runs to score in the inning.  The Mount added another unearned run in the third to make it 5-3.

Hampton took control of the game with a five run bottom of the third to take a 10-3 lead.  The Mount fought back with four runs in the top of the fourth to slice the deficit to 10-7.  Lia Festa had an RBI single and Williams a two-run triple in the inning.

Hampton was able to keep the Mount off the scoreboard the rest of the way to earn the win.
