Baltimore, Md (February 21, 2025) – The Mountaineers men's lacrosse team fell to UMBC on Friday (Feb. 21), 12-6. This moves the Mount to 2-3 on the season.
Carter Quested scored three goals on eight shots, leading the Mount in scoring during tonight's contest.
Brody Atkinson extended his scoring streak with another multi-goal game (2), marking his fifth consecutive game with multiple goals for the Mountaineers.
Kevin Whitty scored the Mountaineers' only other goal and collected one groundball.
In the goal
Bennett Wright saved 11 of the 23 shots on goal from UMBC, posting a .478% save percentage for the game.
Nathanael Merchant caused two turnovers, while
Carter Quested led the team in groundballs.
Seamus McCloskey took most of the faceoffs for the Mount, winning two of 11.
UMBC's Jordan Galloway led the way on offense with four goals on six shots. Galloway tallied one groundball and one assist. Following him was Connor Chick who scored three goals of his own on eight shots. Corey Myers was the only other Retriever with multiple goals on the night (2) while Kevin Doughty, Xander Maxwell, and Ayden Davis each scored one goal of their own. Connor McMahon held his own in goal, tallying 10 saves on 16 shots on goal. Alex Steers carried the weight for the Retrievers competing in all faceoffs in the game. Steers won an impressive 19 of 22, giving the Retrievers the possession advantage.
The first quarter was dominated by the Retrievers. UMBC scored five goals in the opening quarter, all unanswered by the Mount. After two more Retrievers goals,
Brody Atkinson opened the scoring for the Mount. Just over a minute later,
Carter Quested found the back of the net after a long pass clear by
Mekai Nelson. Quested would then add another goal to his count to cut UMBC's lead down, 7-3.
Brody Atkinson would score another goal, bringing the Mount to within three.The final goal of the half came from UMBC's Jordan Galloway to make the score, 8-4 UMBC.
The third quarter saw only one goal scored, with Quested getting his third of the day. In the fourth, UMBC would tally two more goals before
Kevin Whitty scored the Mount's final goal of the night. The Retrievers would go on to score two more goals and take the win, 12-6
The Mount will return to action next Saturday, March 1 against Monmouth at Waldron Family Stadium. This will be the Mount's final non-conference game before taking on Quinnipiac at home on March 8 at 11 AM.
