Arlandus Keyes Paces Mount St. Mary's to 73-66 Win at Canisius

Buffalo, N.Y. (February 16, 2025)—Arlandus Keyes scored a career-high 17 points to pace Mount St. Mary's past Canisius, 73-66, on a snowy afternoon in Buffalo.  Keyes had eight points and an assist during the Mount's 12-0 run that proved to be the difference.  Mount St. Mary's improves to 15-10 overall and 8-6 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference with the victory.

Canisius used an 8-0 run to take a 53-50 advantage on a Topa Kona three-pointer, but Keyes responded with a step-back triple to tie the score.  Canisius regained the lead when Paul McMillan IV connected on a three of his own to make it 56-53 with 6:24 left.

Keyes tied the game again with a three-pointer to kick-start a 12-0 run that gave the Mount the lead for good.  Carmelo Pacheco found Jedy Cordilia in transition to put the Mount ahead, 58-56, and Keyes hit a pair of free throws for a four-point lead.  Keyes then fed Javon Ervin for a basket in transition before capping the run with a three to make it 65-56 with 4:09 on the clock.
Keyes finished with a career-high 17 points, hitting 5-of-9 from three-point range in the win.  Cordilia added 14 points and seven rebounds with Dallas Hobbs also in double figures with 10 points.  Terrell Ard Jr. pulled down a team-high 12 rebounds to help the Mount to a commanding 40-24 edge on the boards.  Xavier Lipscomb had a solid all-around game with seven points, seven rebounds and six assists.  McMillan IV led all scorers with 21 points while Kopa added 19 in the loss.

The Mount shot 50.0 percent from the field in the game, including 13-of-23 (.565) in the second half.  Mount St. Mary's was +16 in rebound margin while hitting 10-of-23 (.435) from beyond the arc in the game.  The Mount held Canisius to 39.7 percent shooting (23-of-58), but the Golden Griffins (2-23, 2-12 MAAC) were 13-of-31 (.419) from beyond the arc.
In the opening half, Pacheco hit a three-pointer to give the Mount its biggest lead of the first half at 17-12.  The Golden Griffins answered with an 8-1 run to grab a 20-18 lead on an Anthony Benard jumper.  The teams exchanged the lead until the Mount's Ard Jr. converted a feed from Xavier Lipscomb for a 29-28 advantage.  Keyes drained a triple to push the Mount's lead to 32-28 at the break.
Cordilia led the Mount with 10 points and five rebounds in the first half while Pacheco hit 3-of-4 from three-point range for nine points. McMillan IV had nine points to pace the Golden Griffins in the opening half. 
The Mount shot 44.4 percent (12-of-27) overall and 35.7 percent (5-of-14) from three-point range in the first half.  Canisius shot 33.3 percent (10-of-30), but hit 7-of-18 (.389) from beyond the arc.  The Mount held a 23-13 edge on the boards in the first half, outscoring Canisius, 11-0, in second chance points.
NOTES:
  • Mount St. Mary's is 6-2 all-time against the Golden Griffins.
  • The Mountaineers moved into a tie for fourth place with Manhattan in the MAAC standings with an 8-6 league mark.
  • The Mount is now 15-10 on the season, the most wins by a Mount team since the 2017-18 squad had a final record of 18-14.
  • Mount St. Mary's improves to 12-0 this season when scoring 70 or more points.
