Mount St. Mary's Falls to West Virginia in Season Opener

Morgantown, W. Va. (November 4, 2025)—Mount St. Mary's fell at West Virginia, 70-54, in the season opener on Tuesday night at Hope Coliseum.  Trey Deveaux paced the Mount with 15 points in the game.

Deveaux added six rebounds to his team-high 15 points to lead a balanced offense.  Anastasios Rozakeas chipped in nine points and three steals while Luke McEldon, Mason So and Xavier Lipscomb each finished with eight points.  Lipscomb had a solid all-around stat line with nine rebounds, five assists and four steals while So grabbed a career high seven rebounds while adding three assists.Jasper Floyd led WVU with 25 points and five steals, Honor Huff had 16 points and Brenen Lorient had a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds.

The Mount shot 39.1 percent (18-of-46) in the game, including 5-of-17 (.294) from three-point range.  The Mount committed 20 turnovers, leading to 25 WVU points, but held a 38-to-29 edge on the boards.  WVU shot 43.8 percent overall in the game and 27.8 percent from beyond the arc.  WVU held a big edge at the foul line, hitting 23-of-35 (.657) compared to the Mount's 13-of-19 (.684).

The Mount trailed 35-29 at the half, and pulled within six at 41-35 on a McEldon putback, but back-to-back threes by WVU pushed the margin to 12 with just under 14 minutes left.. Trailing 52-42, the Mount challenged an out of bounds call with 6:56 left in the game, the first challenge of the season with the NCAA's new challenge rules.  The call was reversed, giving the Mount the ball, and Deveaux converted a bucket in the lane to make it an eight-point game.  A foul on WVU's Jasper Floyd gave the Mount the ball back, and McEldon converted a pass from So to make it 52-46.  WVU, however, scored the next six points to push the lead back to 12 with just over four minutes remaining, and maintained the lead the res tof the way..

In the opening half, the Mount got off to a slow start, falling behind 9-4 with five turnovers in the opening four minutes.  A 7-0 run, capped by a So three-pointer, gave the Mount its first lead of the game.  The game remained tight with the Mount taking a 25-22 advantage after an Justin Amadi traditional three-point play. WVU was able to close the half on a 13-to-4 run to take a 35-29 lead at the break.

NOTES
  • The game tonight marked the 117th season opener in program history.The Mount is now 59-58 all-time in season openers, including a 5-33 mark since moving to NCAA Division I in 1988-89.
  • This was the seventh all-time meeting between the Mount and West Virginia with all seven meetings played in Morgantown.It was the fifth time the two teams have met in the season opener with WVU winning all seven games in the series.
  • Freshman Yakhya Diop made his collegiate debut for the Mount, finishing with two points and a rebound in six minutes.Redshirt freshman Elijah Espinosa also played his first collegiate game, registering an assist in five minutes of action.
UP NEXT
  • The Mount hosts Bucknell on Friday, November 7, for the home opener.Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
  • Fans are encouraged to get to the arena early with a special gate opening time for 5:45 p.m., and to Wear Black as the Mount did throughout last year's historic MAAC Championship run. Giveaways will be a rally towel to the first 1,000 fans courtesy of Educational Systems Federal Credit Union.   • Beginning at 6:45 p.m., the pregame festivities inside the arena begin. The Star-Spangled Banner will be performed by Olivia Rubini, finalist from The Voice and Mount St. Mary's alum. The 2024-25 MAAC championship banner gets unveiled in a pre-game ceremony. Also included will be the first-ever Mount St. Mary's light show, welcoming the Mountaineers back onto the home floor for the first time in 2025-26.
