Mount St. Mary's Collects Big Road Win at Merrimack, 66-58

Box Score North Andover, Mass. (January 31, 2025)—Mount St. Mary's built a 21-point second-half lead and held on for an impressive 66-58 win at Merrimack on Friday night.  Dola Adebayo paced the Mountaineers with 16 points while Jedy Cordilia added 12 points and a career-high 18 rebounds in the victory.  The win snapped the Mount's four-game losing streak, improving the team's record to 12-9 overall and 5-5 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Leading by 15 at the half, the Mountaineers extended the advantage to 46-25 five minutes into the second half after a Carmelo Pacheco three-pointer.  The Warriors (11-10, 8-2 MAAC) would not go away, chipping away at the deficit.  They pulled within two points, 56-54, after a Tye Dorsett three-pointer with 4:24 remaining.

Merrimack had a chance to take the lead with three and a half minutes remaining, but Adam Clark missed a shot in the lane.  The Warriors got the offensive rebound, but Dorsett was off the mark on a three, but Clark grabbed the rebound this time.  Clark, however, missed a three and the Mount's Dallas Hobbs grabbed the board.  On the ensuing possession, Hobbs fed Cordilia for a dunk for a 58-54 lead.  After a Merrimack turnover, Pacheco drained his fourth three-pointer of the game to make it 61-54 with 1:59 on the clock.  The closest Merrimack would get the rest of the way was within five points.

Adebayo had 16 points and five rebounds, hitting 7-of-11 from the field, to pace the Mount in scoring.  Cordilia added 12 points, his career high 18 rebounds and a career-best four assists.  Pacheco added 14 points, hitting 4-of-8 from three-point range in the win.  Keyes scored nine points, Xavier Lipscomb had eight points and five rebounds, and Hobbs chipped in seven points, nine rebounds and five assists in the victory.  Matt Becht led Merrimack with 13 points while Clark finished with 11 points, seven assists, five rebounds and four steals.

The Mount started the game quick, building an early 9-to-2 advantage.  Adebayo provided the first four points on putbacks, Pacheco hit a three and Cordilia capped the run with two free throws.
The Mountaineers continued their first-half surge, grabbing a 30-13 lead with 7:33 left in the half after a Keyes three-pointer.  The Mount hit 6-of-9 from beyond the arc over the first 13 minutes.  The Keyes triple capped an 11-0 Mount scoring run.  The Mountaineers were able to maintain the lead, taking a 37-22 advantage to the locker room at the half. 

Keyes led the Mount with nine points in the first half, hitting all three of his three-point attempts.  Adebayo added eight points with Cordilia and Pacheco chipping in six each.  Cordilia pulled down 12 rebounds in the opening 20 minutes.

GAME NOTES
  • The Mount holds a 7-1 lead in the all-time series with Merrimack with six wins in a row.
  • Cordilia's 18 rebounds are the most by a Mountaineer in a game since Malik Jefferson pulled down 20 at American on December 18, 2018.
  • Cordilia's double-double of 12 points and 18 rebounds was his second of the season, and the fourth of his career.
  • The Mount shot 51.2 percent in the game overall and were 9-of-17 (.529) from three-point range.The Mount hit 7-of-13 from beyond the arc in the opening half.
  • The Mountaineers committed 14 of their 19 turnovers in the second half.The Mount was 9-of-16 (.563) from the field in the second half.
  • The Mount held a 43-to-23 edge on the boards in the game.
