EMMITSBURG, Md. (September 28, 2024) – Freshman
Luciano Schiaffini provided the game-winning goal as the Mount St. Mary's men's soccer team defeated Merrimack 2-1 Saturday at Waldron Family Stadium. The victory is Mount's first of the season and they open Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play 1-0.
Both the Mount's goals came off corner kicks. Schiffiani's shot came in the 78
th minute after Dominik Toplolsky sent it in. The goal came off the freshman's right foot into the top left-hand corner, benefiting from a missed corral by Merrimack keeper Nelton Semedo. The earlier goal was off the head of
Maks Czyz minutes into the second half. His attempt was a rebound off the crossbar.
Schiffiani scored for the first time in his college career, and Czyz scored for the first time this season.
On defense, Mount St. Mary's put together a solid effort, allowing only five shots to the Warriors. Merrimack's goal came in the 60
th minute as Herman Rugland curled in a free kick.
The victory is the first for head coach
Brett Teach at the Mount, and the 269
th of his career.
Mount St. Mary's will look to double its point total from three to six when they travel to Manhattan University next Saturday (Oct. 5).
