Mountaineers Heartbroken in Final Minutes at Duquesne

EMMITSBURG, Md. (September 24, 2024) – The last 10 minutes of Mount St. Mary's men's soccer versus Duquesne was an emotional roller coaster. Junee Lee scored the equalizing goal with six minutes to spare, only to watch the Dukes grab a breakaway with 90 seconds left to steal the match, 2-1.

Lee scored for the second straight contest, using a header to notch the goal. He took a feed that came off the feet of Graham Dougald and Mackie Sacarellos. The Mount sophomore now leads the team in goals with three this season.

Before the frenzied final 10 minutes, defense was the order of the match. Duquesne did not allow a shot on goal prior to the Lee header, and the Mount kept the Dukes off the board for the opening two-thirds of the match. Ali Nasser drilled a 30-plus yard strike in the 66th minute for the 1-0 lead.

With seconds ticking away, the Dukes intercepted the ball at midfield. The duo of Ashton Jell and Javon Ervin found Maxi Hopfer splitting the defense. Hopfer was able to put the attempt past the Mount defense and keeper for the game-winner.

Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play begins Saturday (Sept. 28) as the Mount host Merrimack. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. from Waldron Family Stadium.
