EMMITSBURG, Md. (September 17, 2024) – Facing a ranked opponent in rainy conditions, Mount St. Mary's battled tough against #21 James Madison. The Dukes earned a pair of second half goals to take the contest, but the Mount made it interesting on a set piece goal by
Junee Lee, giving them an opportunity to equalize in the final few minutes.
From the opening kickoff, the Mountaineers proved their might against the worthy opposition.
Dominik Topolsky registered three chances as the Mount held the early shot lead. JMU responded with several attempts, but three saves - including two credited to the team - kept the contest level at the half.
James Madison was able to find the lead in the 57
th minute. Evan Southern got one step on the Mount's defense and put a backwards pass to Jeffrey Aguilar for the score. A second goal off the boot of Enrique Garcia Barelles cemented the Dukes' advantage.
Lee's goal came in the 84
th minute, scoring via a header on a corner kick delivered by
Luc Holden. It was the second tally for Lee this season and Holden's third Mount assist. In addition, the strike also served as only the third concession JMU's vaunted defense conceded all season. The team made a couple charges to try and level the match but the Dukes managed to hold on for the victory.
One week from tonight (Sept. 24), Mount St. Mary's travels to Pittsburgh to take on Duquesne. A 7 p.m. kickoff is scheduled.
