EMMITSBURG, Md. (September 10, 2024) – Mount St. Mary's men's soccer surmounted a vigorous battle to equalize against Delaware, but a second half penalty gave the Blue Hens the lead back and they rode that goal to a 2-1 final in Newark Tuesday.
Delaware delivered an immediate answer to open the match, with the right foot of Richard Monath producing a goal in the seventh minute. The Mountaineers were able to keep level on shots in the opening half with five chances, but those attempts were either blocked or wide of the net.
Scoring five of the first six shots in the half, Mount St. Mary's hit pay dirt with a nifty move from
Dominik Topolsky. Maneuvering past a defender, the senior planted the chance past Delaware goalkeeper Adam Vik. The score by Topolsky was his first 2023 season opener against Bucknell.
The deadlock lasted for 15 minutes until the referee declared a penalty based on hard contact in the box. Sam Donnellan deposited the opportunity in the net. The Mount took three shot attempts to try and equalize again but were unable to do so.
Topolsky was the Mount's leader in shots with three, and
Julian Marcos finished with five saves.
Mount St. Mary's returns home this Saturday (Sept. 14), taking on Longwood. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. from Waldron Family Stadium.
