Second Minute Goal Sparks Mountaineers to 4-0 Win over Hampton

EMMITSBURG, Md. (August 15, 2024) – It took 1:03 of game time for Mount St. Mary's women's soccer to get their offense rolling in 2024. Luisangely Navas scored on the first shot of the match, providing the sparkplug for a 4-0 win in the season opener over Hampton.

Subsequent goals came off the feet of Anika Sproxton, who converted a penalty, and on second half strikes by Sydoney Clarke and Joelle Hamel. All three registered their first goals as Mountaineers, and Hamel can boast a score off her first collegiate shot. Assists came from Ines Gama Ferreira, Cassidy Nichols, and Taylor Simmons.

The defense produced a shutout, limiting the Pirates to nine shots, and only two in the first half. Freshman goalkeeper Adelaide Paredes made two saves on the way to a clean sheet.

Mount St. Mary's won its season opener for the first time since the Spring 2021 season, when they defeated Delaware State 6-1. Under head coach Melissa Sherwood, the Mount moves to 1-0-2 for opening matches.

Looking to improve to 2-0 on the new year, the Mountaineers will hit the road to challenge Delaware State. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. from Dover.
