Mount St. Mary’s Takes Pair from Rider to Make Fifth Straight Conference Win

EMMITSBURG, Md. (May 3rd, 2024) - Mount St. Mary's takes two from one of the conference leaders Rider after defeating the Broncs 5-3 on a David Stirpe three-run home run in the eighth inning in game one while Efrain Correa, Jr. kept the Mountaineers in the game with two solo shots in his first two at-bats. The Mountaineers won game two after tallying 12 hits and scoring bunches in the first, fourth, and fifth innings, 11-10.

Today marks five straight conference wins while having won eight of the past nine.

GAME ONE:

Mount St. Mary's fought from behind after trailing 3-1 in the third inning. The Mount scored their first run on a Correa, Jr. bomb over the right field fence in the bottom of the second inning. Correa, Jr. cranked his second home run of the day in the bottom of the fourth inning as it rung the foul pole to keep his team within striking distance.

Pitching battles through the middle innings as the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings were scoreless. Rider's PJ Craig threw the first seven innings allowing a stingy two runs until David Stirpe ended his day with a three-run laser over left field's fence to take their first lead of the game, 5-3.

Brendan Yagesh threw five innings for the Mountaineers, allowed only two runs on three hits, and fanned four batters. Jackson Snyder threw a scoreless top of the eighth with only one hit and zero runs while punching out two, earning his first win of the season. Deven Sheerin earns his first save of the season in his best Mariano Rivera impression after entering in the ninth to go three up-three down with a punchout.

GAME TWO:

The Mountaineers started early in this one, scoring often as they hung four runs on two hits on the Broncs in the bottom of the first inning. Scott Seeker started things off with a deep double back to the warning track, followed by a JT Landwehr drop third strike and an Aiden Tierney fielder's choice, complimented by a catcher's interference to load the bases. Jayson Kramer walked a run in, followed by a Stirpe fielder's choice scoring Landwehr. Ty Stecko capped the inning with a roped double to left field, scoring Tierney and Stirpe , 4-0.

Rider responded in the top of the third inning with a two-run shot over the left center fence and doing the same in the top of the fourth inning over left field's foul pole, 4-4.

The Mountaineers broke open the game with four more runs on five hits in the bottom of the fourth frame. Seeker opened the scoring with an RBI single through the right side, scoring Meier. Landwehr followed finding the gap in left center, scoring Long. After reloading the bases Nick Fleming singled up the gut to score Seeker and Landwehr, 8-4.

The Broncs scored one in the top of the fifth on a ground out to the third baseman.

The Mount added three runs to cushion their lead in the bottom of the frame. Seeker's name was called once again after ringing a line drive sacrifice fly to center field to score, scoring Meier. Landwehr added two of a two RBI single through the right-side scoring Braxton and Long, 11-5.

Rider answered with consecutive one run innings in the fifth and sixth innings to cut the Mount lead to four runs. The Broncs added four more between the seventh and eighth innings until Landwehr was able to shut them down in the ninth inning to secure the Mount's second win of the day, 11-10.
