Mount Sees Rally Fall Short Against Niagara in First Chance at Final

EMMITSBURG, Md. (May 24, 2024) – Mount St. Mary's baseball fell to the Niagara Purple Eagles Friday in their first opportunity to clinch a spot for the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship Series. The team will have a second chance in an elimination game later Friday evening.

Falling by an 8-6 decision, the Mountaineers did not go down without a fight. Trailing by four with three outs to work with, Jayson Kramer smacked a two-run shot to Clover Stadium's Short Porch. David Stirpe was able to reach scoring position and put the tying run to the dish. Niagara's Liam Reynolds was able to get a strikeout and clinch the game.

Early returns from the Mount looked promising, as the squad delivered three runs in the second frame. Evan Meier was the sparkplug with his two-run single, driving home Efrain Correa, Jr. and Kramer. Evan Smith brought in Shane Wockley on an RBI groundout for a 3-0 advantage.

Jackson Snyder started on the hill and pitched two innings, stymieing Niagara's first attempt at a rally by conceding only one run. Brendan Yagesh followed him to the mound, and his first two innings maintained the game at 3-1.

The Purple Eagles made the most of an extra out in the fifth after an error allowed the ball to escape the infield. A sacrifice fly and run scoring singles from Kelly Corl and Nick Moline transferred the lead to Niagara. The No. 2 seed then turned to its closer Zach Cameron, who guided his team through the eighth inning, allowing only one Mount run to touch home. Three runs for the Purple Eagles in the seventh further inhibited efforts for a rally.

A start time and opponent for this evening's game hinge on the winner between No. 1 Fairfield and No. 6 Marist, and the completion time of that contest. Details will be updated here, @Mount_BSB on Twitter, and the baseball schedule page.
