Mount St. Mary’s Takes Series over Canisius; Sheerin Snaps Single Season Record

EMMITSBURG, Md. (May 12th, 2024) – The Mountaineers were rolling in game one totaling 16 hits and winning the contest, 15-4. Mount St. Mary's lost game two 7-5 on a fierce ninth inning rally by Canisius. The 2-1 series win puts the Mount in great position regarding a playoff berth as they have rattled off wins in seven of the last nine conference games.
 
GAME ONE:
 
Canisius was the first to score after walking in two runs in the top of the second. The Mount answered in the bottom of the third with five runs on three hits. JT Landwehr was the first to reach paydirt, scoring on a wild pitch. Ty Stecko followed with his first career homer, being a grand slam, to bust open the game and give his team a 5-2 lead.
 
Deven Sheerin took over the mound in the third striking out the first four batters he faced. Sheerin grabbed the win in this one, his fifth of the season, tallying six innings, allowing six hits, two runs, while fanning nine batters. Sheerin snapped the single season strikeout record previously held by Dustin Pease back in 2004 with 88 strikeouts. Deven sits at 94 with four games left in the regular season.
 
Canisius scored a run in the top of the sixth to cut the Mount's lead to two runs headed into the bottom of the frame. The Mount answered with three runs in the sixth and seven runs in the seventh, giving them an 11-run lead.
 
David Stirpe drove in two runs, while Evan Meier knocked in the third to go ahead 8-4 going into the seventh. The Mount hung seven runs in the seventh while batting around in the lineup. Stirpe opened the scoring with an RBI single to right field, followed by another Stecko RBI, giving him five on the day. Meier added two runs with a double to the wall in right field. Josh Braxton hit an RBI single through the left side, followed by a Tyler Long two-run shot over the right field fence, marking his fifth of the year.
 
GAME TWO:
 
After a scoreless first two innings, the Golden Griffins opened the scoring with a run on a wild pitch in the top of the third. Jakob Foster opened the game on the mound for the Mountaineers, threw four strong innings while allowing just one run and struck out two. Kyle Speas was called to the hill in the fifth, the sophomore threw two scoreless innings and fanned two batters.
 
The Mountaineers responded in the bottom of the fourth inning with three runs on three hits. Efrain Correa, Jr. opened the scoring with a two RBI single through the right side while advancing on a bad throw to home by the right fielder. Braxton followed with an RBI single to right center, scoring Correa, Jr. to give his team a two-run lead headed into the fifth inning, 3-1.
 
Seeker opened the bottom of the fifth inning with a leadoff double to left field. Aiden Tierney followed with a single down the left field line to score seeker and cushion the Mount's lead, 4-1.
 
The Golden Griffins scored a run in the top of the seventh inning on a deep sacrifice fly to left center to cut the Mount's lead to two runs. Nick Fleming was called to the plate in the bottom of the eighth inning and made the most of the opportunity as the junior cranked his first home run of the year over the right field fence to exchange the run the Griff's scored an inning prior.
 
Canisius was able to put runners on second and third to open the top of the ninth with the tying run at the plate, able to cash in on two runs via a double to left field. The Golden Griffins added two more on a tagging error to take their second lead of the day, 7-5.
 
The Mountaineers loaded the bags in the bottom of the frame but were unable to cash in on the two runs needed to extend the game.
