EMMITSBURG, Md. (May 11, 2024) – Timely hitting, lockdown pitching, and effective fielding guided Mount St. Mary's baseball to a 7-1 win over Canisius at a soggy E.T. Straw Family Stadium on Saturday. By virtue of taking the series opener, the Mount moves into a tie with the Golden Griffins for fourth place in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), with both teams holding 10-9 conference records.
Shane Wockley went 3-for-4 at the dish, smacking his ninth home run of the year in the process.
Evan Meier hit his first career homer during the contest, and
JT Landwehr added a moon shot in the seventh. Seven of the Mount's starting nine registered base hits in the game, and every one of them reached base at some point.
On the bump,
Luke Pryor set the tone as the opener with two shutdown innings logged.
Brendan Yagesh locked in following a Canisius single in the third, holding the Griffs scoreless until the final frame.
Jackson Snyder came in to induce the ultimate out. Together, the trio limited Canisius to 32 batters, striking out five of them and trusting a steady defense for the rest.
Mount's offense came early and often.
Efrain Correa, Jr. singled home
Tyler Long and Landwehr for a 2-0 lead. Wockley's blast came in the third, and
Jayson Kramer broke for home on a wild pitch in the fourth. Meier and Landwehr's shots capped off the scoring. Shutout through eight, Canisius tacked a run on late with a pinch-hit double from Drew Podlas.
Mount St. Mary's looks to grab sole possession of fourth and further cement a spot in the MAAC Tournament during a Sunday (May 12) doubleheader. First pitch is 11 a.m. from Emmitsburg with Senior Day ceremonies taking place 30 minutes prior to start time.
