Mount Softball Knocks Off Towson, 7-2

Towson, Md. (April 9, 2024)—Mount St. Mary's knocked off Towson, 7-2, in a midweek road matchup on Tuesday afternoon.  Tori Bowles and Hannah Gartrell paced the offense with two hits each while Olivia Murphy picked up the win with 4.2 innings of scoreless relief in the victory.

Trailing 1-0 heading into the top of the third inning, the Mountaineers offense got on track after Towson starter Maddie Gardner had retired the Mount's first eight batters.  Gartrell drew a two-out walk, and Abigayle Perry followed by reaching on an error by Towson's center fielder that allowed Gartrell to score with Perry ending up on third base.  Julia Vincent followed with an RBI double to give the Mount a 2-1 advantage.  Bowles followed with a single to left, but Vincent was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.

Mount starting pitcher Kaya Hannon allowed back-to-back one out singles in the bottom of the third, and Murphy was summoned into the game in relief.  Towson loaded the bases with another base hit, and a walk to Broadbent forced home the tying run. Murphy, however, got the final out of the inning on a flyout to right to end the threat.

The Mount (8-21) then took control of the game with four runs in the top of the fifth inning.  Lia Festa and Gartrell each singled to lead off the inning with a Perry sacrifice bunt moving both runners into scoring position.  A walk to Vincent loaded the bases, and Bowles came through with a clutch single to left to plate a pair of runs to give the Mount the lead.  The Tigers turned to Alyssa Bostley in relief, and the Mount's Zoe Truxon promptly greeted her with an RBI single up the middle for a 5-2 advantage.  Kassidy Johnson's RBI groundout brought home the final run in the frame.

The Mountaineers added another run in the top of the sixth.  Gartrell doubled with two outs and pinch runner Avery Dinges stole third.  Perry then reached on an error to score Dinges with the final run of the contest.
Gartrell finished the game 2-for-2 at the plate with a double and a walk for the Mountaineers.  Bowles went 2-for-4 for the Mountaineers with two RBI as well.  The Mount tallied nine hits in the game.  In the circle, Hannon allowed two runs (one earned) in 2.1 innings of work while Murphy picked up the win, allowing no runs and just four hits in 4.2 innings of relief.

The Mountaineers return to the field with a three-game home series with Quinnipiac this weekend.  The series begins with a doubleheader at Our Lady of the Meadows Field on Saturday at noon.
