EMMITSBURG, Md. (April 13, 2024) – Dealing with windy conditions at Our Lady of the Meadows Field, freshman
Sophia Schmehl locked into a pitchers' duel with Quinnipiac's Sydney Horan. A couple of sixth inning runs proved the difference as Mount St. Mary's softball fell to the Bobcats, 2-1.
Schmehl went six innings and scattered five hits to go along with two strikeouts. After firing 116 pitches to 26 batters, she was relieved by
Olivia Murphy, who threw a scoreless seventh.
On offense, the top of the lineup shined.
Abigayle Perry and
Julia Vincent each registered 2-for-2 days at the dish.
Kassidy Johnson also kicked off a rally with a double, joining Vincent in the extra base hit category.
With both pitchers entrenched, offense came at a premium. Mount cracked the case first with a two-out rally in the third. Perry triple to set up Vincent who procured a bloop double down the left field line. Schmehl then retired the next six Bobcats in a row to preserve a 1-0 edge.
Quinnipiac completed their rally in the sixth inning. With two runners in scoring position, Brooke Hilliard grounded out to the right side, permitting Ally Hochstadter to score. Hannah Davis stepped up and hit another grounder that found the right spot in the infield to leg out a single, scoring pinch-runner Noelle Reid.
Two rallies for the Mount kept the contest exciting. Perry and Vincent singled to start the sixth, but the Bobcats turned a key double play. Jonson's double ignited another chance in the seventh. Yet again, Quinnipiac answered by getting the key outs needed to win the game.
The series concludes Sunday (Apr. 14) with a doubleheader at Our Lady of the Meadows Field.
