Mount St. Mary’s Edged by Late Marist Run

EMMITSBURG, Md. (April 7th, 2024) – Mount St. Mary's Baseball fell to a two-run Red Fox rally in the ninth inning, edged by a run, 6-5.

Kyle Speas threw a strong five innings for the Mountaineers to open the game. The sophomore ended his day allowing five hits, two runs, three walks, while tallying five strikeouts.

After his fifth hit-by-pitch of the series, JT Landwehr set a new school record with times HBP in a single season. The Sophomore will end up shattering the previous record held by Eric Smith in the 2007 season of 18, as Landwehr has 19 just halfway through the season.

Evan Smith opened it up for the Mount with an RBI single to left center in the second inning to give his team the first lead of the day, 1-0.

Marist responded in the fourth with an RBI single to right field to tie the game.

The Mount answered with a three-run inning in the bottom of the frame. Efrain Correa, Jr. started things off with a roped single up the middle, scoring Jayson Kramer. Aiden Tierney followed with an RBI sac-fly to fight field, scoring Ty Fredo. Smith added to the rally with a beautifully placed sac-bunt toward first base forcing the out at first while scoring Correa, Jr., 4-1.

The Red Foxes chipped away at the lead scoring a run in the sixth inning and two in the eighth inning to knot the game for a second time, 4-4.

Scott Seeker answered with an RBI single up the gut, scoring Josh Braxton who legged two bases out of what is generally one to regain the lead, 5-4.

Marist scored two runs in the ninth inning after a near game ending double play off of a diving stop and flip by Landwehr and a bare handed turn by David Stirpe, yet the runner made it to the bag just before the throw. Capitalizing on the controversial call, the Red Foxes made two runs out of it to take the game, 6-5.
