Mount’s Upset Bid of Fairfield Overturned by Stags in Final Minutes

EMMITSBURG, Md. (April 6, 2024) – Mount St. Mary's women's lacrosse gave the #25 ranked Fairfield Stags all they could handle and were within minutes of earning the program's first-ever win over a ranked opponent. But Fairfield found two late goals to survive the upset bid, 11-10.

Mackenzi Furlong led the Mount on the goal board, and Christina Haspert recorded a hat trick of three with some crucial scores down the stretch. Madison Harmening and Anna McQuay also found the back of the net for the Mountaineers. Logan Cook came off the bench and earned another solid performance of four ground balls, three caused turnovers, and three draw controls.

Fairfield saw Libby Rowe match Furlong for a game-high four goals. Elizabeth Talluto added a hat trick for the Stags.

A strong close to the first half helped the Mount stay in the contest after Fairfield grabbed a 6-2 lead. Two goals by Furlong and McQuay's free position pulled the game within one. The Stags countered with a pair to maintain an 8-5 halftime advantage.

The third quarter was all Mountaineers. Furlong pieced together her third and fourth scores, the latter of which tied the game with 4:08 remaining. Haspert also contributed a goal in the 3-0 run. Kelly Haggerty scored for Fairfield to open the fourth, but Harmening and Haspert provided the game-tying and go-ahead goals for a 10-9 Mount lead with 6:35 to go. Needing a comeback to boost to 5-0 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, the Stags turned to Rowe who provided two clutch shots to transfer the lead back to the visitors. Their defense was able to make 11-10 stand over the final few minutes.

Mount St. Mary's hits the road for the next two games, battling Rider and Siena.
