Elizabeth King's Extra-Inning Homer Lifts Mount in Split at Marist

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. (April 6, 2024)--Elizabeth King's eighth-inning homer and Sophia Schmehl's complete-game lifted Mount St. Mary's to a 3-2 road win over Marist in the opening game of a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader.  The Red Foxes earned the split with a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning to take game two, 6-3.

In the opening game, King drove the ball over fence in left center field to give the Mount a 3-2 advantage in the top of the eighth inning.  Schmehl was able to pitch around a pair of Marist singles in the bottom of the eighth to preserve the extra-inning victory.

The Mount (7-20, 1-6 MAAC) took the lead in the top of the first inning when Avery Dinges and King posted back-to-back one-out singles.  After a groundout moved the runners over, Zoe Truxon reached on an error by the pitcher with Dinges scampering home with the first run of the game.  King came through in the second with an RBI single to plate Kassidy Johnson to give the Mount a 2-0 lead.
Schmehl made that lead stand until the bottom of the fifth when Peyton Pusey drove the ball over the right field fence to tie the score at 2-2.

King went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI for the Mount in the opening game while Schmehl struck out six while allowing seven hits in the complete-game victory to move to 3-3 on the season.

Marist earned a 6-3 win in game two behind a pair of home runs from Miah McDonald.  The Mount offense was led by home runs from Kassidy Johnson and Lia Fest.

The Red Foxes (24-10, 6-2 MAAC) took the early lead on a Maddie Pleasants RBI single in the first and a McDonald two-run homer in the third for a 3-0 advantage.  The Mount rallied to tie the score with two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth.  Johnson belted a one-out solo shot in the fifth to get the Mount on the board to cut the deficit to 3-1.  Abigayle Perry singled, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored when the shortstop misplayed a Julia Vincent hit to make it 3-2.  Fest then belted a solo home run with two outs in the sixth to tie the game at 3-3.

The Red Foxes responded in the bottom of the sixth when McDonald hit a three-run homer for a 6-3 lead.  The Mount challenged in the top of the seventh, loading the bases on singles from Johnson and Vincent and a Tori Bowles walk.  Marist got out of the jam with a strikeout to earn the split.

The teams complete the three-game series tomorrow with a game at noon.
