EMMITSBURG, Md. (April 6, 2024) – A back-and-forth game for Mount St. Mary's men's lacrosse saw them hold a 10-9 lead with seven minutes to play. The visiting Marist Red Foxes were able to pull off the comeback and deny the Mount a win by an 11-10 score.
Kevin Whitty was instrumental in the Mount's efforts thanks to his first career hat trick.
Brody Atkinson continued to be an offensive catalyst with a game-high four goals, and
Dan Bradley was a multi-goal scorer.
Mitchell Dunham had a big game on defense with eight ground balls and four caused turnovers, while
Ethan Holobinko won 13 of 24 faceoffs.
Marist received a hat trick from Jake Deacy and a strong defensive showing of six ground balls and four caused turnovers from Aiden McCaffrey.
The Red Foxes went up 2-0 and shut down offensive opportunities for the Mount in the opening frame Whitty was the first to score for the home side with a goal 22 seconds into the second. That kicked off a 3-0 run for the Mountaineers with scores from Atkinson and
Cormac Giblin. As the first half concluded, both offenses kicked it into high gear trading goals. Bradley's second score came with 57 seconds left until halftime and handed the Mount a 6-5 edge at the break.
Marist once again regained control in the third by tallying the first three out of the locker room. Unbothered, the Mount took advantage of a man-up opportunity with a Whitty goal. Deacy sent one home for the Red Foxes to make 9-7 entering the fourth. The Mount then staked their claim at a win with a 3-0 run with one goal from Whitty and two from Atkinson. But the last seven minutes belonged to Marist, who held the Mountaineers at bay and receiving goals from Sean Mullan and Drew Anderson to flip the script and give themselves a victory.
After a trip to Canisius Wednesday (Apr. 10), the Mount welcomes Sacred Heart Saturday (Apr. 13) to Emmitsburg for a noon start.
