Sheerin & Tierney Shine in Win; Mountaineers Split the Day

EMMITSBURG, Md. (April 6th, 2024) – Mount St. Mary's fell to Marist' pitching in game one, 1-4. The Mountaineers battled out of an eight-run second inning to close the game with a win in game two, 12-9. Coach Leoni and crew tallied 15 knocks in the win.
 
Deven Sheerin took the hill in the third inning of game two, shutting down the Red Fox offense. The freshman allowed three hits, one run, while tallying 12 punch outs. Aiden Tierney took over the game on offense posting a 4-5 game at the plate with a run scored and an RBI. JT Landwehr wore four pitches today, tying him for the most hit batter in the nation per NCAA Baseball DI Stats.
 
GAME ONE:
 
After a three-inning defensive stand by both teams Marist was the first to score a run in the top of the fourth inning. Bayram Hot opened the scoring with an unearned run scored on a throwing error, 1-0.
   
The Mountaineers responded in the bottom of the frame after Tyler Long reached on a booted ball by the short stop, scoring Josh Braxton, 1-1.
 
Marist took command of the game on the hill and in the eighth inning after scoring a run on a single to shortstop to take their first lead of the game, 2-1. The Red Foxes cushioned their lead in the top of the ninth after a two-run home run to right field, 4-2.
 
GAME TWO:
 
The Mountaineers opened the game with five runs in the first led by a JT Landwehr RBI single. Landwehr scored on an error by the third baseman, bringing David Stirpe to the plate. Stirpe popped a sacrifice fly into right field, allowing Jayson Kramer to score. Aiden Tierney followed with a bag clearing two RBI double to left field to close the inning for the Mount, 5-0.
   
Marist erupted for eight runs in the top of the second inning on five hits. The rally started after loading the bases and drawing a walk to score their first. The inning's scoring ended with a two-run home run over right field to take the lead, 8-5.
 
Scott Seeker hit a solo homer, his fifth of the season, to cut the deficit to two runs in the second inning, originally ruled foul, the play was overturned by the umpire staff.  
 
The Mountaineers claimed command of the game with a four-run, four-hit effort in the bottom of the frame. Long opened the scoring with an RBI single to right field, followed by a Tierney run scored on a throwing error by the third baseman. Landwehr scored the next two off an RBI single to right field followed by an error, scoring Scott Seeker, and Long, 10-8.
   
Deven Sheerin took the hill in the top of the fourth and proceeded to silence the Red Foxes, allowing just one run the rest of the game.
 
The Mountaineers added two runs to cushion their lead in the bottom of the seventh after Landwehr scored Evan Smith on a single through the right side. Kramer followed with a perfectly placed sacrifice bunt down the first base line to score Long, 12-9.
 
Sheerin threw a three up, three down top of the ninth to ice the game and send the Mount home victorious.
 
UPCOMING
 
The rubber match will be played tomorrow at E.T. Straw Family Stadium with first pitch to be thrown at 1 p.m.
