EMMITSBURG, Md. (April 3, 2024) – Forced to contend with rainy conditions, Mount St. Mary's women's lacrosse used its defense to get its second straight victory, defeating the Canisius Golden Griffins 8-5 Wednesday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo.
Mackey Fick limited the competition by causing four turnovers and scooping up two ground balls.
Addison Malone also earned multiple caused turnovers, and
Ashlyn Watkins finished with nine saves. After Canisius scored three times in the opening frame, the Mountaineers kept them off the scoreboard all but twice over the final 45 minutes.
On offense, Mount St. Mary's pitched in a 6-0 run to seal the win. Leading scorers
Anna Salerno and
Mackenzi Furlong both supplied two goals toward the effort. Furlong added an assist to become the points leader with three
Anna McQuay,
Madison Harmening,
Shannon McTavish, and
Logan Cook all contributed to the scoring.
The triumph improves the Mount's record to 4-7 and 2-2 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). Continuing to turn around their season, the team has won four of its last seven. In the conference standings they are now in a three-way tie for fourth place with Niagara and Rider.
Both teams traded small first half runs before the Mount took charge in the second half. The visitors went up 2-0, and Canisius struck back with the next four. Mount's takeover of the game started before halftime on McTavish's score. The Griffins would not score again until the 3:02 mark of the fourth, allowing the Mountaineers to grab the lead in the third quarter and not look back.
Mount St. Mary's takes on a tough challenge when they come back home Saturday as they welcome #25 Fairfield to Emmitsburg. First draw is at noon.
