Mountaineers Sweep Iona & Jump Three Spots in Conference Standings

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (April 28th, 2024) – After erupting for four runs in the first inning, the Mount kept command the rest of the way to win today, 12-5 and sweep Iona. Mount St. Mary's is now in fourth place in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference standings with an in-conference record of 7-8.

Tyler Long led off with a walk while advancing to third on two wild pitches, Seeker followed with a walk while JT Landwehr was hit by a pitch to load the bags to open the game. Shane Wockley brought two runs in on single up the middle scoring Seeker and Long. Jayson Kramer followed with an RBI single to center field, scoring Landwehr. Efrain Correa, Jr. capped the inning with a sacrifice fly to left center to score Wockley, 4-0.

Iona responded with three runs in the bottom of the third inning to cut the Mount lead to a run. The Gaels strung together five singles and a walk.

Landwehr cushioned the lead with an RBI in the fourth scoring Long to go ahead two runs. The Gaels exchanged the run in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single to left field, 5-4.

Nick Fleming, 2-2 at the plate with two RBIs today, knocked Long in in the sixth inning to retake a two-run lead. A Seeker walk brought Ty Fredo to paydirt in the seventh inning to cushion the Mount's lead, 7-4. In the eighth Fredo singled to left field to push Fleming across the plate and go up four runs.

The Mount closed the game in the ninth inning with four more runs, a perfect way to cap the command they had over Iona this weekend. A Seeker RBI double, Fleming sac-fly, and Kramer two RBI single credited the runs to go ahead 8 runs, 12-4.

The Gaels scored a run in the bottom of the frame on a single to left center yet struck out the next at-bat to end the game and leave the Mountaineers with a perfect weekend.
