Mount Goes Two Up on Iona; Looking to Sweep Sunday

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (April 27th, 2024) – A five run second inning boosted the Mountaineers to a win this afternoon, defeating Iona, 6-5. Evan Meier and Ty Fredo highlighted the day scoring a combined three runs and five hits.
 
After a scoreless first inning Mount St. Mary's erupted for five runs in the second. David Stirpe opened the scoring with a sac-fly to center field to score Efrain Correa, Jr. Ty Fredo followed with a single to left field, advanced a base on a fielding error to put runners on second and third base. Evan Meier followed with an RBI single to the gap in right center to score Jayson Kramer. A few batters later Long was faced with a bases loaded 1 out situation and was able to cash in a run on an RBI ground out to second base. Scott Seeker stepped to the plate to clear the bases with a single to center field, scoring Meier and Evan Smith, 5-0.
 
The Mount added a run to their early lead in the top of the third inning on a Meier RBI single to center field, scoring Fredo.
 
Iona scored their first run in the bottom of the fourth inning after opening the inning with consecutive singles, 6-1. A scoreless fifth inning brought us to the bottom of the sixth where the Gaels added a run to the board off a sac-fly to second base, 6-2.
 
Iona mounted a fierce ninth inning rally to score three runs and bring the game within a run. The rally was cut short by a strong defensive stand from the Mount after turning a double play to win the game, 6-5.
 
Tommy Moore opened the game with two scoreless innings while tallying two punch outs, followed by a four-inning stretch out of JT Landwehr who allowed just two runs with three punch outs. Jackson Snyder threw two innings for the Mountaineers and allowed just one hit, no runs, with two strikeouts.
