Sheerin and Yagesh Shut Down Fairfield to Take Series Opener

EMMITSBURG, Md. (April 19th, 2024) – Mount St. Mary's ran away with the lead in the fifth inning and didn't look back as they took the series opener from Fairfield, 6-3. Scott Seeker had a phenomenal day at the plate going 4-5 with a run scored and an RBI.
 
Brendan Yagesh and Deven Sheerin put together a masterclass performance on the mound today after combining for 13 strikeouts while allowing a stingy three runs. Yagesh opened the game for the Mount to pitch four innings, allow three hits, one run, while tallying five punch outs. Sheerin picked up his fourth win of the season after throwing five innings, allowing two runs on two hits, and fanning eight batters.
 
To open the game, Efrain Correa, Jr. hit a sac line out to left field scoring Tyler Long to take an early lead, 1-0.
 
Fairfield responded with a solo home run in the second inning to knot the game at one.
 
Scott Seeker answered with a single up the middle, scoring Evan Smith for their second lead, 2-1.
 
After two quiet innings Fairfield took their first lead of the game off a two RBI single to center field, 3-2.
 
It was all Mount St. Mary's from the fifth inning on as Ty Stecko and Aiden Tierney hit back-to-back doubles down opposite ends of the diamond scoring Seeker, Stecko, and Landwehr to go ahead two runs. Josh Braxton closed the inning with an RBI sacrifice-fly to center field to score Tierney and cushion their lead to three runs, 6-3.
 
Sheerin silenced the Stags offense with three consecutive innings of only facing three batters, while being one batter off from retiring the side in the bottom of the eighth inning.
