EMMITSBURG, Md. (April 17, 2024) – Mount St. Mary's women's lacrosse clinches a spot in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship at the end of April, making the postseason in their sixth straight opportunity. The team defeated Manhattan 12-8 at Waldron Family Stadium, and results elsewhere helped ensure the spot.
In the game, the Mount jumped to a 10-3 lead, enough to withstand a fourth quarter comeback by the Jaspers as they made key defensive holds and scored twice down the stretch.
Madison Harmening finished with four goals and
Christina Haspert added a hat trick on offense.
Mackey Fick earned three ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers, and
Ashlyn Watkins collected six saves.
Down 2-1 early, the team ripped off a 3-0 run to flip the lead back to the Mountaineers. Harmening posted the next three goals – two of them woman-up and the other shorthanded.
Logan Cook and Haspert tacked onto the scoresheet to build the 10-3 advantage.
Manhattan would use some free position shots and feed off turnovers to stack five in a row and bring the game back to 10-8. Turnovers stemmed the tide, along with a Watkins save with 3:28 left. That stand kept the Jaspers at bay, and goals by
Anna McQuay and Haspert sealed the victory.
Wins by Iona and Fairfield over Marist and Rider helped Mount St. Mary's clinch the spot. The last regular season game helps determine what playoff seed the Mountaineers will earn. A win against Marist Saturday (Apr. 20) gets the team the No. 5 seed. Prior to the game, the team honors its senior in an 11 a.m. pregame ceremony.
