Mountaineers Defeat Marist, Garner Winning MAAC Record and Honor Seniors

EMMITSBURG, Md. (April 20, 2024) – Using a season high for offensive firepower, Mount St. Mary's women's lacrosse earned a winning record in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play and honored its senior class in style with a 19-9 victory over Marist.

The Mount finishes the season 5-4 in the MAAC, with the No. 5 seed locked in before the game began.

Mackenzi Furlong made the most of her Senior Day, serving as the Mount's points leader with six on four goals and a pair of assists. Madison Harmening also scored four times. On defense, Addison Malone and Lizzie Stevenson secured two caused turnovers each. Logan Cook earned a hat trick and Anna McQuay, MK Allingham, and Anna Salerno were all multi-goal scorers. McQuay had four ground balls along with her goal total. Ashlyn Watkins had an impressive day at the net with 12 saves.

Marist received a four goal day from Kelly Trotta and 11 draw control wins from Caitlin McNaboe. The Red Foxes close out their season at 3-13.

Seizing control early in the contest, the Mount came out firing to score seven times in the opening period. Salerno and Allingham made quick work for a 2-0 start. After Marist scored to get on the board, the Mountaineers procured a 4-0 run capped by two Furlong scores. The Red Foxes were able to patch together some goals, but the home side held an 8-4 halftime lead.

The visitors looked to spoil the Senior Day festivities with their strong start to the third period. Marist scored four of the first five goals to pull the game back to 9-8. It took 13 seconds before a one-goal game went back to two on a Furlong score. That tally kicked off a 4-1 run to place the lead back into comfortable margins. Punctual goals and strong defense ensured a Mount victory.

On Sunday, April 28, Mount St. Mary's will face either Iona or Niagara in the opening round. Game time is also yet to be determined.
