Late Rally Ends Short of Win for Mount St. Mary’s

NIAGARA FALLS, NY (April 13th, 2024) – After an eager start by both teams, the Mount fell victim to a seven run seventh inning allowing the Purple Eagles to steal game two from Mount St. Mary's, 15-13.

Scoring early and often the Mount put two runs on the board to open this afternoon's contest. With two outs, Tyler Long drew a walk leading to an Aiden Tierney single to center, putting runners on the corner bags. Coach Leoni called for the squeeze, successfully advancing Tierney to second and scoring Long. Jayson Kramer followed with an RBI single, scoring Tierney, 2-0.

Niagara answered quickly with two of their own on two hits, including a two-run home run over left field.

Headed to the top of the second knotted at two, Evan Meier opened things up after a David Stirpe double with an RBI single up the middle. A few batters later, Scott Seeker followed with an RBI single down the right field line, scoring Meier, 4-2.

Two home runs split by a batter by the Purple Eagles scored four runs to take their first lead of the game, 6-4.

David Stirpe kept the Mount offense hot with an RBI single on a full count to center field, scoring Kramer to cut the deficit to a run. Evan Smith (3rd of the season) gave the Mount their first lead of the game with a deep three run homer over center field in the seventh inning, 8-6.

Deven Sheerin entered the game in the second inning to silence the red-hot Niagara offense. Sheerin threw 4 2/3 scoreless innings while notching eight punch outs before the Purple Eagles were able to break through for seven runs in the seventh inning, four credited to Sheerin, 13-8.

The gift that kept giving was Long and Tierney getting on base today as Long roped a lead off single through the left side while Tierney doubled down the left field line, putting runners on second and third base. Kramer followed with an RBI ground out to first base, scoring Long, while Efrain Correa, Jr. hit a sacrifice-fly to right field scoring Tierney.

The offense wouldn't give for Niagara as they added two runs on three hits to cushion their lead in the bottom of the frame, 15-10.

The Mountaineers entered the ninth down five runs. Smith drew a walk, Landwehr bunted a single, and Seeker drew a walk to load the bags with one out. Long stepped to the plate and singled through the left side batting two runs in and bringing the tying run to the plate. Tierney followed with a fielder's choice after legging out what could have been a game-ending double-play to put runners on the corner bags. Next up, Efrain Correa, Jr. hit a deep fly ball all the way back to the warning track, in which the right fielder had to make multiple turns to make a great play on the ball, cutting the Mount's run painfully short in what was a gritty effort in the ninth inning.
